Omega 3 fatty acids, together with omega 6, are defined as "essential" fatty acids because the human body cannot synthesize them and they must therefore be taken through the diet. The main fatty acids of the omega-3 group are α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). α-linolenic acid (ALA) is of plant origin while EPA and DHA are mainly of animal origin. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as omega-3 EPA and DHA, play a key role in various tissues in our body and perform many functions:

  • are precursors of eicosanoids or superhormones, molecules with direct action on many organs and tissues and involved in the inflammatory response
  • contribute to the construction of cell membranes
  • support the cognitive and visual functions
  • support the heart function
  • promote the restoration of metabolic parameters (pressure, cholesterol, etc.) in many pathological conditions

Scientific research has amply demonstrated that inflammation is generated by an alteration in the balance of eicosanoid hormones, which are divided into anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory. Their concentration depends on the ratio between arachidonic acid (AA) , which belongs to the omega-6 group and is a precursor of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, and omega-3, as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which generate anti-inflammatory eicosanoids. In the Western diet the ratio between omega 6 and omega 3 is 10-16:1, unbalanced towards omega 6, ideally it should instead be between 4:1 and 8:1.

EPA SPORT+ is a product with a high EPA content (1000 mg per daily dose) and with DHA, especially indicated to supplement the diet of athletes. In fact, in addition to increasing strength, muscle growth and endurance, physical activity always causes, a varying degree of mechanical and metabolic stress on the human body. This leads to two results: inflammation and oxidative stress. Numerous studies have shown that omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids play a very important role in the resolution of inflammation, through the synthesis of anti-inflammatory substances. During physical activity, especially when intense, the skeletal muscle produces large amounts of pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially interleukin 6 (IL6), which increases almost 100-fold. Increased plasma concentrations of IL-6 can lead to a catabolic effect and muscle atrophy, resulting in reduced muscle strength, increased muscle pain and impaired muscle function.

Omega 3 fatty acids intervene in the modulation of the inflammatory process, counteracting the production of inflammatory eicosanoids and increasing the production of anti-inflammatory substances. Scientific evidence has shown that an increased intake of EPA stimulates the production by immune system cells of prostaglandins (PGE3) and resolvins, very powerful anti-inflammatories, capable of:

  • modulating macrophage phagocytosis
  • reducing the production of cytokines, free radicals and molecules that facilitate the infiltration of leukocytes into the muscle

Other important activities of omega-3, and in particular of EPA in sports, are related to their ability to:

  • improve blood flow to the muscles, even in contraction, resulting in a greater supply of oxygen to the tissue and promoting the elimination of toxins produced during exercise.
  • modulate the permeability of muscle cell membranes, facilitating the passage of nutrients into the cell
  • reduce post-exercise muscle pain, thanks to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action, supporting post-workout recovery
