Description
The iron is an essential mineral for our body as it is an element contained in hemoglobin and is linked to energy metabolism. It is involved in fundamental biological processes such as the production of red blood cells, normal activity of the intestine and liver, and strengthening of the immune system.
In individuals who practice sports, iron deficiency can be common as situations of ‘myolysis’ (partial destruction of muscle fibers) and of hemolysis, that is, the rupture of red blood cells in addition to sweating profuse. Moreover, an unbalanced diet may not provide the required iron intake, which negatively affects the athlete's performance by reducing power, strength, and aerobic endurance. Iron absorption varies greatly from person to person and is influenced by diet: in fact, it is not the quantity but the quality of iron that matters. For example, iron bound to oxalate and phytate complexes is poorly absorbed, iron from meat is absorbed better, and iron from eggs is absorbed even better. However, these foods often cannot be consumed in excess by athletes due to caloric and dietary balance reasons, which is why supplementation of this mineral is often necessary.
Currently, many iron-based supplements are available on the market that can cause side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Additionally, an excess of free iron in the intestinal lumen can potentially lead to the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the gut at the expense of the intestinal microbiome, causing dysbiosis and increasing the risk of infections.
This is why we chose Lipofer®, microencapsulated and micronized liposomal iron, protected by a sunflower lecithin microcapsule that acts as a protective shell and boasts a high gastrointestinal absorption and ahigh bioavailability together with a reduced toxicity systemic. Microencapsulated iron does not come into contact with the gastrointestinal mucosa or any pathogenic microorganisms but is absorbed directly by the intestine.
Some studies have shown that, thanks to liposomal technology, iron absorption is 3.5 times greater than free pyrophosphate iron, 2.7 times higher than sulfate iron, and 4.1 times higher than gluconate iron. Furthermore, the plasma concentration of liposomal iron was found to be highest two hours after intake, which ensures greater bioavailability of the element for all metabolic processes.
IRON+ is formulated with microencapsulated and micronized liposomal iron with the addition of Vitamin C for further promote absorption and bioavailability of the mineral, thus making its integration more effective.
